From Requirements to a Running Web Application in Every Stack — A laundry is one of the most honest businesses there is. A customer hands over a bag of clothes, the cashier weighs it, writes a bill, hangs a tag, and promises a day and an hour.

Overview

Chapter 1 tells the story of the business and how a laundry really runs. Chapter 2 sets up your workbench — VS Code, the languages, the databases and the servers — on Windows, macOS or Linux. Chapters 3 and 4 turn conversations into requirements and use cases. Chapter 5 presents a full year of realistic transactions, and Chapters 6 and 7 design the database and ask it the thirty questions an owner asks. Chapters 8 to 12 build the application track by track: the front end, PHP, Python with Flask, the two Java tracks, and ASP.NET Core. Chapter 13 rebuilds it with four frameworks. Chapter 14 covers testing, security and deployment, and Chapter 15 draws the lessons together.

Every program in this book was run before its output was printed, and every chapter states exactly what was run and what could not be. The programs are collected in the accompanying Code folder, chapter by chapter, next to the complete application in App, with a README in every folder that explains how to run it in a terminal and in VS Code on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Who this book is for: Students who have learned the pieces — HTML, SQL, a server-side language — and want to see them come together in one real system. Lecturers who want a single case study that runs through a whole curriculum. Owners of small businesses who want to understand what a developer actually builds for them. You are assumed to know nothing: Chapter 2 starts with an empty computer and ends with the same first page served five ways.
